Notion Export Stuck or Failing? The Actual Causes

The export dialog says "Preparing your export..." and then nothing. Or it completes — but the file is HTML, not the PDF you asked for. Or it just fails silently and the download never starts. These are the three failure modes of Notion's export system, and each has a different cause.

Failure 1: Stuck on "Preparing"

Notion processes exports server-side in a queue shared across all users. Your 500-page workspace is behind everyone else's export. Large pages with many images make it worse. Sometimes it completes in 10 minutes; sometimes the request times out and dies without an error.

What helps: export smaller chunks (single pages instead of whole sections), avoid peak hours, retry. Not much else — the queue is Notion's infrastructure, not yours.

Failure 2: PDF silently becomes HTML

This one is sneakier: you request PDF, wait, get a download — and it's an HTML file. What happened is Notion's PDF renderer failed on your content (often a specific block it can't rasterize), and instead of erroring, it fell back to HTML export. No warning. No error message. Just the wrong format.

What helps: find the block that breaks it — usually an embed, a specific image format, or an equation — delete or replace it, try again. Trial and error.

Failure 3: Export never completes

The dialog closes, no download starts, no error appears. Your export request was accepted and then dropped. Common with very large pages or workspaces. Browser extensions can also block the download.

What helps: try a private window (rules out extensions), a different browser, smaller scope. If it's a workspace-size problem, only exporting in chunks works.
